The Original Spiritual Sex Psychology and Its Perversion in This World

March 23, 2017 Spiritual Science 0

There is a great deal of conflict and confusion today surrounding sex and sexual roles. We are no longer just men and women. New York City, for example, officially recognizes an amazing 31 varieties of sexual orientation/identification. (I can’t even imagine what they are – and don’t really think I want to know!)

There is demand for what used to be called sexual perversion to be protected by the government, and any perceived threats thereof is hyperbolically shouted out with an alarming number of F-words, and other extremely vulgar displays, at an increasing number of protests. There is also a backlash to women’s rights from the men with growing men’s movements MRA – Men’s Rights Activists – while other men are responding simply by withdrawing altogether from serious committed relationships with women (MGTOW).

You might be surprised to hear me say that a great deal, if not all, of the confusion and conflict stems from not understanding sex from the spiritual perspective. But the fact is that most, or all, of the problems of the world, including sex issues, could be healed if we understood the Spiritual Science. The goal of this blog is to teach the spiritual worldview along with the Spiritual Science and their application to material life. Sex issues, because of their prevalence, are an important place to have the discussion.

Let’s begin at the beginning with a simplified description of the creation. In the beginning there is only God because one of the very definitions of God is “the cause of all causes” or “the origin of everything.” Thus there was nothing before God. Sex must therefore also originate with Him (yes, Him, please be patient. We’ll get to that part soon). But as we all know being alone isn’t much fun, therefore He desired to establish variety for His personal pleasure. He does this through His various energies, much the same as we use our energies, like money, for our pleasure.

The Lord has three main energies by which He creates and controls everything – sandini, samvit and hladini. The energy by which He maintains His existence is called sandhini – the existence potency. The energy by which He knows Himself and causes others to know Him is called samvit – the knowledge potency. And the energy through which He experiences unlimited transcendental bliss is called hladini – the pleasure potency. He uses, or manifests, these energies in various ways for His pleasure. There is a Sanskrit word for God that means the possessor of all such potencies or opulence, and that is Bhagavan.

Being the origin and possessor of these energies He is the natural enjoyer of them – they are meant for His pleasure. The jivas (us living beings) as expansions of God are minute fragments of the sandini, samvit and hladini shaktis. That is, we are God-like, having the same attributes and qualities of God, but in minute portion. The unlimited numbers of jivas, by dint of coming from the Lord, have a natural attraction for Him. The Lord reciprocates that attraction, and thus the jivas and the Lord experience divine, unending, ever-expanding love. This is the unconditional love that we all yearn for and is the perfection of all human beings, and the goal of self-realization.

Like all of His potencies and expansions, the jivas are meant to be enjoyed by Him, to serve Him and give pleasure to Him. He is thus the supreme enjoyer, or purusha in Sanskrit, which is the very definition and concept of male. The purusha is personified as the supreme male Bhagavan Krishna. Everything else, including the jiva, is His energy, and is meant to be enjoyed by Himand give pleasure to Him. Categorically together, everything besides Bhagavan is prikriti. Prakriti is the very definition of the concept of female.

Bhagavan’s pleasure potency, hladini shakti, is personified as the supreme female who is the embodiment of all feminine qualities. Her name is Radharani, or simply Radha. As Krishna’s pleasure potency Radharani exists only to serve and please Krishna and she is the epitome of such love. Enchanted by Her love Krishna only wants to please Radha. Thus Radha and Krishna are the quintessential loving couple – the supreme feminine and masculine aspects of God. They are originally one, but to increase Their happiness the one separated as two for the pleasurable exchange of love. Radha and Krishna are archetypes of the female and maleTheir exchange of love is the archetype and origin of all love.

All feminine qualities are inherent in Radharani’s nature, as the female counterpart to Krishna, the supreme male. The same is true for the masculine qualities of Krishna. These complementary qualities cause the exchange of loving energy to flow between Them. Thus the concept of male and female goes far beyond simply gender and mating parts. The feminine and masculine qualities are not social inventions or assignments as is being suggested today, but are psychological differences that find their origin and expression in the archetypes of purusha and prakriti.

Male and Female in the Material World

Because the jiva is an expansion of Bhagavan, and because Bhagavan is the purusha, the jiva also has the inclination of being the purusha, or enjoyer. But in the spiritual world there can only be one purusha, therefore this material world is created as a place where the jiva can attempt to play the role of the purusha.

The material world can be considered a perverted reflection of the spiritual world. Just as the reflection of a tree on water appears to be a tree, this material world appears much the same as the spiritual world. Of course the reflection of the tree may look like a tree but it has no actual branches and leaves, and it quivers when waves move through the water. In the same way this material world appears like the spiritual world but it does not have the qualities of the spiritual world. Everything in the spiritual world is of the same spiritual quality and thus does not degrade, change or become corrupted. This world on the other hand is characterized by constant change, but that change allows us to experience the material energy in an unlimited variety of ways as we incarnate and evolve through millions of species of life.

The relationships of the spiritual world are eternal and the love there never fades or dies. Here, although we all want it, lasting love cannot be had due to the changing nature of this world. Nonetheless we aspire for it and do our best to achieve it. But like the unsteady reflection of the tree on water, love in this world is unsteady and changing.
In the spiritual world there is male and female, and thus men and women are found here. However these roles are only perverted reflections of actual male and female. The material bodies of both men and women are only a temporary circumstance here. It is very possible, and even likely, that a jiva can be a man in one life and a woman in the next, or vice versa, allowing the jiva to experience both sides of the male-female duality.
As a reflection of the spiritual world the psychology of the purusha is inherent in the human male here, and the psychology of the prakriti is inherent in the human female. Thus by God’s arrangement men and women are naturally different psychologically, and cannot ever be equal. Equality exists on the spiritual level because both men and women are in fact the spiritual energy as jivas.

The Natural Material Qualities of Male and Female and Their Degredation

There is an effort among extreme feminists to blame men for all of the problems in the world, and specifically for the subjugation and exploitation of women. This is an extremely narrow perspective. Granted there are such men guilty of those traits, but the fact is that there are varieties of the male psychology, and varieties of female psychology as well, as determined by the influences of the material energy.

The first material influence, and one that is quickly and increasingly being lost is goodness, sattva, or sattva-guna. The male under the influence of the material quality of goodness is a powerful man who uses his strength to protect and defend. He naturally wants to provide for his family and finds fulfillment in doing so. Similarly, the woman under the influence of goodness naturally wants to support and care for her husband and to have and nurture her children. Neither see their situation as one of exploitation, but view their relationship with its different roles as a way to satisfy their natural propensities. In the condition of goodness both husband and wife are able to find satisfaction, and they are naturally internally happy, chaste and faithful to each other. Giving to, and caring for each other are natural and normal, and are done with joy. This is the natural arrangement of the Lord that mirrors the original purusha/prakriti relationship of Radha and Krishna. This mutually supportive and nurturing relationship can only be realized when the couple has risen above rajas and tamas. Those who are too influenced by the lower qualities are bereft of the ability to understand such naturally happy and satisfying relationships.

The material influence of passion, or rajas, produces a different, and healthier consciousness in both man and woman. Under this influence men are macho and women are feminine. These opposites attract and feed the sexual energy that circulates between the two. Rajas impels a desire for sense gratification, an increased sense of envy and desire to inflate the ego, as well as a sense of dissatisfaction. Thus there is always a desire for more – more and better goods, a bigger house, newer car, fashion and luxury. Physical attractiveness is more important than other personal qualities such as honesty and virtue. Sexual performance and satisfaction are the most important factor in the relationship. Because of the desire for sustained sense gratification if either party fails to deliver there is an increased likelihood of cheating, separation and divorce. There is no satisfaction for persons under the influence of rajas and they are constantly driven to get more. Our entire modern society is based on rajas, and its influence impels people to find a way to avoid the ravages of old age and stay eternally young. That is a hopeless dream in this material world because everything here is temporary by its very nature. That eternal youth and beauty is however, a feature of the spiritual world.

In this post-modern period we observe a very rapid increase of the material influence of ignorance, tamas, or tamo-guna. Human consciousness influenced predominantly by tamo-guna gives us persons that look to satisfy their selfish desires by any means possible. Graft, collusion, theft, cheating are the expedient means to selfish ends, and others, men, women or children are exploited through violence kidnapping, slavery, and murder. One’s own satisfaction is what matters, even at, or especially at, the expense of others. Thus selfishness, cruelty, exploitation, and indeed any means, especially foul, are considered shrewd and fitting. Taking is favored over giving. Under such an influence exploitation is a two-way street: the men attempt to exploit women and women attempt to exploit men. Men will take sex when they want it (rape) and women will use their feminine charms to heartlessly exploit men for money. Men are no longer satisfied with women but desire men, as well as children and animals to satisfy their increasingly perverted sexual desires. Similarly, women begin to prefer women and girls, and yes, animals too, to satisfy their lust. More and more sexual permutations are sought, and as this spreads throughout society such lust is promoted as being normal. Thus there is no innocence for children who are sexually exploited from very early ages. There can be no satisfaction in a relationship when tamas is the dominant characteristic. Behavior becomes perverted and sadistic and leads to the degradation of soul who becomes lost to itself. Under the influence of tamo-guna there are no happy endings, and relationships are destroyed through vicious divorce proceedings, abandonment and/or murder. Children are bereft of protection, are sexually exploited, and in turn later become molesters themselves.

Understanding how the qualities of the material energy affect human consciousness it is easy to see that the entire Western society now functions under the influence of both passion and ignorance (rajas and tamas), much to its degradation.

With increase in the modes of passion and ignorance satisfying relationships become increasingly impossible due to increasingly selfish and perverted desires. Satisfaction is sought at the expense of others, and the natural give and take of a healthy relationship is lost. With increasing tamo-guna, sex is sought in increasingly debased and perverted ways, regardless of with whom, with younger and younger children, or even infants. Bestiality is on the rise in Europe where barnyard brothels are sought for sex tourism, and shameless people even promote their unmitigated lust as being normal. Everything is used to promote and experience sex, especially technology. Smart phones offering unlimited varieties of sexual images anywhere and anytime. Mechanical and lifeless robots, or sex-bots, are being developed and shamelessly will become the norm in a lost and spiritually degraded society.

All of this is a perversion of the original sex psychology of the Supreme Lord and His pleasure potency. Everyone in the material world is attempting to take the place of the purusha and be the enjoyer of this world. However if both parties to the relationship are purusha there is no difference between them, and thus no exchange of sexual energy.

The sexual energy flows due to the differences between the purusha and prakriti. If a woman attempt to be like a man the man will lose his interest in her. Or if the man is too much like a woman, women will not be attracted to him. Even in homosexual relationships one person will be dominant and the other subordinate, or purusha and prakriti. There is an attempt to neuter society – to make men like women and women like men – but the result of this is that there is no natural exchange of sexual energy and thus sex becomes devoid of any loving component to be simply genital gratification, which although temporarily satiating can offer no satisfaction, creating people who are lost to themselves and becoming increasingly unhappy, depressed and suicidal.

Sexual Preoccupation is Spiritual Suicide

Sexual preoccupation, regardless of with whom, degrades and covers the consciousness of the jiva, binding it to the material, bodily conception of life, thus losing the great opportunity for spiritual emancipation from the prison of the material world. We do not belong in this world. The so-called pleasures of this world are limited and temporary, and actually are only suffering. Real pleasure and happiness are found in the spiritual world that is in harmony with our spiritual nature. Sexual absorption, however pleasurable it might be, is something to be minimized by those serious about spiritual growth and development.

The sexual problems of modern society are a result of the excessive influence of tamo-guna. The solution is to increase the influence of sattva, and this can be done most effectively by associating with God through the recitation of His holy names. This can be accomplished by repetition of what is called the maha-mantra, the greatest mantra: Hare Krishna maha-mantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. The sound energy Hare (pronounced Ha-ray) invokes the feminine energy of the Lord, the prakriti, and the sound energy Krishna invokes the influence of the masculine aspect of the Lord, the pususha. By the repetition of this sacred sound the consciousness of the chanter becomes cleansed of the lower qualities of rajas and tamas, and they will become spiritually purified and happy.
